Can you explain the Irish Potato Famine in a nutshell?

the Irish had become dependent on the potato for sustenance and when the potato crop of 1845 through 1850 was attacked by an air borne fungus that had been imported from North America in the holds of freight ships the potato crop was lost and 20 to 25 % of the Irish population starved to death.
