Fireplace Dilema?

I want to know some websites that show fireplace makeovers.... we just bought a house and the fireplace brick I like... its just the mantle and ledge under the fire are a stone slab that the previous owners shilacked.. and I dont like the look of the shinny stone.. what can I do now.
